Conflict Managers serve their school by helping other students resolve conflicts and by helping in many other ways. They are trained and scheduled for duty by the elementary counselors. Students in the 4th and 5th grades are chosen to serve as Conflict Managers by their peers and teachers. While on duty they assist students who are having a problem by using a prescribed problem-solving process. The process is voluntary and students always have the option to ask the playground aides or principal for help if necessary. Conflict Managers are facilitators, not judges or disciplinarians. Conflict Managers help students express their feelings, come up with ideas to solve problems, and find their own best resolutions. The Conflict Managers help during all lunch recess periods. They wear a bright orange vest that identifies them to the students. When they see students in conflict, they offer them assistance. If the disputing students agree, the Conflict Managers help them through the mediation process. Conflict Managers are selected twice a school year by peer and school staff votes. The Conflict Managers are a great asset to our school.
